#1: Wynaut/Wobbuffet!

#1
Thread for people to submit their contributions to the article/s on the first Pokemon of the Edition, Wynaut and Wobbuffet!

To talk about what sort of sections/articles we should have for it, use the main Pokemon of the Edition thread. This is for the actual writing-up/editing/etc of the magazine parts related to these Pokemon, while that thread is for discussing what we should have/make.

Okay, so. We have to move from planning to actually doing something, so here's what we've come up with so far that should be done:
  • ASBN strategies! With Wynaut/Wobbuffet, this could be extremely hilarious. Anyone up for writing anything on this, however brief it may be?
  • Trivia for the actual Pokémon page! Not the most obvious stuff, but some interesting tidbits inside and outside of canon and maybe some fan theories concerning the tail and whatnot. Bulbapedia is probably your friend here, but don't limit yourself. Anyone want to write this one, or a part of it?
  • Do's and Don't's! Or however that should be spelled! (Opinions?) So far we have this:
Do: use Wynaut as a doorstop
Don't: use Wynaut as a punching bag
Any ideas are welcome, but I think in the final version we should limit those to three or four of each, because I can't illustrate a billion of them.
  • Stories, poems, art! If you have any lying around, or would like to write a small piece or draw something to be featured here, please step up because we need you. Anything is welcome at this stage, and we can discuss the inclusion/exclusion of various contributions once we actually have some.

Okay well things of note about wobbuffet to talk about imo are - the tail (and the whole punching bag theory too as in the tail is the animal only), the lipstick thing for female wobbuffet (what about gay wobbuffet though...? =p) and I guess the fact it has that ability warrents mention too. It's a pretty unique ability after all - even arena trap is more limited than it. I also always thought a height/size comparison thing between people/other things and Pokemon is neat.

Oh also wynaut's arms = ears. People often do not realise that. And japanese names might need a mention too? (I am TOO LAZY to check bulba for wha they were/meant atm =p).

We could have a small secton on fanwork recomendations too maybe for stuff not on the dex? Just that I recall this one battle scene written about a wynaut against a wobbuffet suddenly years ago on sppf and I really should find that again. Probably after exams. (For I do not currently recall who the original author is or if they are still around to ask about that and and all).

Sohnano = Is that so? (Wynaut)
Sohnansu = That is so! (Wobbuffet)

So basically they can have an endless conversation! It's also sort of a cultural joke because the Japanese have a tendency to respond to statements with "so nano ka?" or "so nano?" or something similar, because it's basically a notification that you're still listening to the speaker. Yeah.

Specs:
At 14 kg, a Wynaut weighs...
- Just a little bit less than an average three-year-old boy
- As much as roughly 3.7 gallons of 2% fat milk
And at 0.6 m, a Wynaut is about as tall as...
- A full-grown female bloodhound
- Four cacao tree leaves standing on top of each other

At 28.5 kg, a Wobbuffet weighs...
- As much as a big watermelon
- A little less than 25 milk cartons filled with lead
At 1.3 m, a Wobbuffet is as tall as...
- A Lamborhgini Islero
- 4.3 of the world's largest earthworm species standing on top of each other

Also the theory about the tail actually being the Pokémon definitely needs a mention - anyone up for typing that down in a passable way?

What about the cool little urban legend that Wobbuffet's actual brain is located in its tail, and the large blue floppy part is actually just a giant decoy for predators?

As you can see in the image above, its tail has eyes and looks pretty creepy. I believe the inspiration for that idea came from the concept of a blow up whacky waving doll:

Wynaut has the same tail (albeit with larger eyes), so it's an entirely interesting concept that could be put under a 'myth or fact' type section on the fact sheet! :D

EDIT: Whoops, I just realised you already talked about it. =.= Here, let me add something else so I don't suck:

[Image: 175px-Okiagarikoboshi_from_Wakamatsu_%28cropped%29.jpg]

The likely real inspiration for the pair of them is this doll, which will always right itself no matter how many times you knock it over. Give the similarities in appearance and the Pokemon's strong Countering abilities, it's a very obvious comparison.

Also regarding lipstick on lady Wobbuffetts - I'm relatively sure that was just a gag joke. Also, gay people aren't necessarily crossdressers, Marcin. :\

Finally, look how sad the Silver sprite is!

Makes me depressed just looking at it.

^ That, or a punching bag which also exhibits similar behaviour. But that doll does fit well.

One interesting fact highlighted by the dex entries constantly reappears...about its tail of all things. It is a Pokemon keen to protect that small little black flub, and Sapphire tells us that although Wobbuffet endures attacks, its tail cannot and if it was attacked, it'd perform the move Destiny Bond to take the foe down with it. Whyever would that be though? Because of this there is a popular theory that that the Pokemon itself is just the tail. (You can notice that it has eyes as well). As for the rest of the body; it's a blow-up punching bag! That'd explain why the rest performs the retalitation attacks bar Destiny Bond, and also fits with another Dex entry (Gold/HeartGold) which informs us that 'if attacked it inflates its body'.

Also @ their Japanese names: This sums it up.

As soon as you mentioned this, I knew exactly what you were talking about. It's "A Series of Pokemon Battles" by IceKing. There's also another fic I can think of written by someone else, and I could ask her if she'd be willing to have us link to it.

And for now that's all I have to think of. Except for that fact that Wobbuffet's main competition with another of its species is to see how long they can go without eating.

Maybe it's not sad - maybe it's just not done inflating quite yet! The tail seems energetic enough, sticking up like that. Hmm, I say, HMM.

Also, on the subject of lipstick and crossdressing: wouldn't it be really easy to fool your opponent by applying lipstick on the face of your male Wobbuffet? I mean, it's not like they could see any stats or anything "in real life", and so they wouldn't know it's not a female Wobbuffet. They could waste moves trying to attract the thing, or somesuch, when it's not going to work. And, on that note, I wonder if it's possible to mask a female one as a male one by wiping off the lipstick?

Maybe Wobbuffet are a Pokemon race that pick their gender by applying lipstick at a certain age! :o Still, I like the 'not done inflating' idea. Maybe when I don't have all of the headaches I'll write up a section for it all (POKEBUSTERS :D FIRST WE BLOW UP A WOBBUFFET)

Anni, haha that would be a fun scenario for a battle scene. I like to think, though, female Wobbuffet already had lipstick on their face just for simplicity's sake. :P

And Amy, YES POKEBUSTERS. Also, don't forget Michael Bayplosions. :P

WORK IN PROGRESS

Just putting info together as a post. If stuff gets made latter (like say an ASBN analysis of it) then they can be a separate post. Fic/Art recs can be separate posts as well.

Other stuff to add:
blah

Pokemon Analysis: Wynaut and Wobbuffet!

[Image: 180px-360Wynaut.png] [Image: 110px-202Wobbuffet.png]
They sure look excited.

Because what better set of Pokemon could one possibly use for the first magazine analysis than these? Other Pokemon to grab the spotlight later on shall be chosen by a random number generator, but these two get the exception solely because Wynaut is the name of the magazine.

Facts you may not have known

Japanese names are always fun to investigate as they're just as punny or silly as the English Pokemon names half the time. And it's no exception with these two:

Sohnano = Is that so? (Wynaut)
Sohnansu = That is so! (Wobbuffet)

So basically they can have an endless conversation! It's also sort of a cultural joke because the Japanese have a tendency to respond to statements with "so nano ka?" or "so nano?" or something along those lines, because it's basically a notification that you're still listening to the speaker.

In other words, this fun-filled video sums up the potential hilarity.

At 14 kg, a Wynaut weighs...
- Just a little bit less than an average three-year-old boy
- As much as roughly 3.7 gallons of 2% fat milk
And at 0.6 m, a Wynaut is about as tall as...

The likely real inspiration for the pair of them is this doll, which will always right itself no matter how many times you knock it over. Give the similarities in appearance and the Pokemon's strong Countering abilities, it's a very obvious comparison. Another one is a punching bag, given that's how the Pokedex classifies Wobbuffet as.

[Image: 175px-Okiagarikoboshi_from_Wakamatsu_%28cropped%29.jpg]
Pictured: Not a Wobbuffet.

One interesting fact highlighted by the dex entries for Wobbuffet constantly reappears...about its tail of all things. It is a Pokemon keen to protect that small little black flub, and Sapphire tells us that although Wobbuffet endures attacks, its tail cannot sustain damage. And if it was attacked, it'd perform the move Destiny Bond to take the foe down with it. Whyever would that be though? Because of these tidbits, there is a popular theory that that the Pokemon itself is just the tail. (You can notice that it has eyes as well). As for the rest of the body; it's a blow-up punching bag! That'd explain why the rest performs the retaliation attacks bar Destiny Bond, and also fits with another Dex entry (Gold/HeartGold) which informs us that 'if attacked it inflates its body'.

Besides that, many don't realise that Wynaut's ears actually serve as arms...

[Image: 180px-Wynaut_anime.png] (maybe a better picture can be found)
Aww, he's just 'armless.

Meanwhile Wobbuffet's main competition with another of its species is to see how long they can go without eating. These are clearly a bunch of Pokemon who specialise in endurance.

Wobbuffet has one of the more noticeable changes from the introduction of the gender differences aspect of fourth generation games. Female Wobbuffet have lipstick upon their mouths, which one supposes helps them with the breeding process when they can look so alike. Why is unknown. Maybe it is just something picked up upon from people? As it's not evident on female Wynaut it could also be thought of as a coming-of-age thing. Fooling other Pokemon by putting lipstick on males or removing from females has yet to be tested.

Its ability in Shadow Tag deserves mention as well. It is the reason why Wobbuffet has spent a lot of its time in competitive battling sidelined in the so-called Uber tier going by Smogon standards. Its inability to directly attack anything might seem more of a hindrance, but having both Counter and Mirror Coat along with a few other annoying moves such as Encore proved enough when paired up with Shadow Tag. It restricts Pokemon from switching out by normal means, and this often resulted in a KO from Wobbuffet at least if the trainer knew how to use the punching bag, thanks to its rather large HP stat. Essentially, switch into a physical attacker and Counter away, or knock out a special attacing Pokemon with Mirror Coat. All those fasting competitions with each other must have paid off!

This ability did have its issues however - two Wobbuffet against in each other in 3rd gen games holding Leftovers would in fact result in an endless battle, as neither could switch and Leftover health outdid what was dealt by Struggle when they eventually ran out of PP. This meant that such battles often ended when the battery (or trainer) ran out of energy, or more likely with the latter patience.

Do
- Use your Wynaut and Wobbuffet as protection.
- Have practice battles with your Wynaut or Wobbuffet.
- Use Wynaut as a doorstop.
- Bet on Wobbuffet in a boxing match.

Don't
- Use your Wynaut and Wobbuffet as a pillow.
- Have a battle of endurance against your Wynaut or Wobbuffet.
- Ask your female Wobbuffet for fashion tips.
- Use Wynaut as a punching bag.

Later on you can expect some recommendations over the next month on cool Wynaut art, fics and so forth! If you know of any yourself, or indeed have made some yourself, don't hesitate to tell us about it on the forums and it may get a spotlight!

Nitpicks!

bobandbill Wrote:Wobbuffett has one of the more noticeable

Wobbuffet.

I'd also suggest replacing the dashes with periods in these:

Quote:changes from the introduction of the gender differences aspect of fourth generation games - female Wobbuffet have lipstick upon their mouths, which one supposes helps them with the breeding process when they can look so alike. Why is unknown - maybe it is just something picked up upon from people?

Dashes don't really serve to connect independent clauses, basically.

Quote:Its ability in Shadow Tag deserves mention as well!

While not grammatically incorrect, I'm always leery about the use of the exclamation point in anything that isn't dialogue. Since you're going for a more professional tone (like a fact book or matter-of-fact kind of air), it might actually hinder that effect, if that makes sense.

Quote:but having both Counter and Mirror Coat along with a few other annoying moves such as Encore proved enough when paired up with Shadow Tag, the ability that only a small handful of other Pokemon got via Arena Trap, a less-effective form of the ability (namely the Diglett line and Trapinch).

It actually seems like you're wandering away from the point you're trying to make by describing Arena Trap and Shadow Tag. I'd suggest dropping the description of Arena Trap altogether, simplifying the one for Shadow Tag, and finishing up whatever thought you had in mind here.

Besides that, throwing in some do's and don'ts!

Do
- Use your Wynaut and Wobbuffet as protection.
- Have practice battles with your Wynaut or Wobbuffet.
Don't
- Use your Wynaut and Wobbuffet as a pillow.
- Have a battle of endurance against your Wynaut or Wobbuffet.
- Ask your female Wobbuffet for fashion tips.

Idk, I'm not very creative atm. :(
Holmes: Punch me in the face.
Watson: Punch you?
Holmes: Yes! Punch me! In the face! Didn't you hear me?
Watson: I always hear "punch me in the face" when you're speaking, but it's usually subtext.
